Past Her Prime?

The term “Go Granny” has taken a whole new meaning in these past  year. In September, Diana Nyad, completed a record breaking 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida; not only was she the oldest to complete the swim, but she broke the previous record. In October, Julia Rose, a woman in her seventies from Utah, won a beauty contest held in California for the title of Queen Lola. The year 2013 has been a great year for grandmothers, from winning beauty pageants to shattering world record, these grandmothers won’t be using walkers any time soon.

In a recent “grandma power” moment, this grandmother is taking the center stage and stealing the spot light from women a third of her age in the modeling world. Sarah Wiley, an absolutely stunning woman, is one of the oldest models in the industry at the age of sixty five. Wiley was scouted by the London based agency Close Models at the ripened age of fifty seven. The silver haired model says that she never had any dream of being a model, it was never something that crossed her mind, and instead she became a ballerina.

Having worked in shoots, such as , being a regular face on glamorous clothes horse for “This Morning”, as well as on Gok Wan’s “How To Look Good Naked” and for the retailer John Lewis, this grandmother has made a name for herself in the fashion world.

But even with all of her accomplishments that she has gained in the fashion industry, this model feels that her greatest accomplishment was sending the positive message to her grandchildren. Her goal was to show her grandchildren that beauty is not to be found in a box or created in a list of “What you should be”.

“Saddened that her 10-year-old granddaughter is given the impression by magazines that in order to be successful a woman must be thin, Wiley wishes to challenge traditional idea of ‘beauty’.”

Sarah Wiley is starting a mini revolution in the fashion world with her ageless beauty and silver hair and I, for one, will be all to happy to jump on that bandwagon.
