Sun Damage Preventers

Some of the greatest beauty remedies out there are the ones that you find in your own kitchen. And why wouldn’t they be? Home remedies are cheap, convenient, and work like magic. Did I mention cheap?

Well thank the beauty gods and fashion goddesses! Cause Spring has just rolled around, and with the coming of Spring, means the coming of warm weather and a clear blue sky. But with Spring rushing in, and gratefully so, the need for sun protection has become a priority.

With all the excitement stirring up around the warm weather, it’s easy to forget (while we’re planning on which bathing suits to wear on our already planned out beach trips) that we still need to give ourselves a dose of sun safety. Now, the sun is absolutely great, there’s just no way to deny that, but without the proper protection that welcomed sunshine can lead to beauty down falls.

Here are a few of my favorite home remedies to protect your beauty from those big bad sun rays. And get this, they’re all delicious!

  • Hair + Avocados

Why?: Avocados are great for healing and preventing sun damage in your hair due to it’s high monounsaturated fat content (MUFAS) which works as a “shield” blocking sun rays from hitting your hair. As an extra bonus, the avocado is said to help give your hair shiny, softness, and length!

What To Do: Take an overly rip avocado and mash it in a bowl; this could be used with either a fork or blender. Then, apply the mashed avocado to your dry hair and massage through your entire head. Let the avocado sit for 1-2 hours before washing it out with luke warm water.

  • Skin + Honey

Why?: Honey is filled with numerous antioxidants that are effective when both used internally and externally. When applied to your skin, honey creates a barrier between your delicate skin and the harsh sun, thus preventing damaging. Honey’s antioxidants also help to heal any previous skin damages and help to rid your skin of damaging free radicals.

What To Do: Honey can be used in two ways to sun damage. The next time you are taking a bath, pour in a 1/4 cup of honey into the water and let your skin do all the work. The other way you can use honey to prevent sun damage is to combine a tablespoon of honey with a table spoon of water and apply it to your skin as you would a lotion.

  • Lips + Brown Sugar/Olive Oil

Why?: Brown sugar is a key ingredient in home remedy tools when it comes to removing dead skin. The reason for this is because it is considered a “soft-hard”, meaning, that though it is a solid form the brown sugar will quickly become a paste when a liquid is added to it. The liquid we are using for our lips is the olive oil, also known as a super food for it’s healing powers. Combined, brown sugar and olive oil help to prevent and heal those sun damaged cracked lips.

What To Do: Mix a teaspoon of brown sugar with a teaspoon of olive oil in a small cup. Then, apply the paste to your lips and gently rub the mixture in a circular motion. Be sure not to rub to hard because this could cause tiny cuts in the skin! But when used right, your lips will be kissably soft when finished.
