Ice Beauty

There’s a reason why Elsa and the Ice Witch of Narnia have amazing skin!

While the use of cryotherapy as a beauty tool had a moment in the sun during 2010, it’s back to mainstreaming media and gaining popularity. But, most people are asking. What exactly is cryotherapy? And how can an extreme freeze help me to become more beautiful?

So, first things first. What exactly is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a PROFESSIONALLY done procedure (please don’t try to do this at home!). A specialist uses a vacuum cup applicator to suck in pockets of fat, which are then put through controlled cooling for an hour. This procedure allows for the breakdown of fat cells without harming your skin. The newest one to be FDA approved and is now up for use is the CoolSculpting system by Zeltiq.

Unlike dieting or cardio exercises, which are unable to pinpoint trouble areas, cryotherapy can do exactly that. If your trouble area is your belly, your thighs, your arms, or those overly affectionate love handles, cryotherapy allows you remove fat from just those areas without affecting the rest of your body. Why is that great? Well, as any women who has lost weight will tell you, their breast are the first to shrink and their trouble area is the last. With cryotherapy, you can get rid of that little muffin top without losing the girls.

Another great thing about cryotherapy is that, unlike liposuction or any body sculpting surgery, this freezing procedure is as non-invasive as they come. There are no incisions, needles, or slicing of any kind. So, for all of you who have a pain tolerance of zero and are squeamish around needles (I have yet to master the art of not fainting when giving blood), cryotherapy is a great procedure for you.

Other benefits of cryotherapy include erasing wrinkles and removing virtually all varicose veins – aka, spider veins – without any of the negative side effect one would get with botox, such as bruising, stiffness, and discomfort.

The downside? According to an article in Bazaar, the ideal candidate for cryotherapy are those who are already 10-15 pounds within their healthy body weight. It’s also a little painful that each session can cost between $700-$1500 dollars. But, hey, that’s the cost of fast beauty for you!
